This LTE lessons supports pupils to develop their understanding of symbolism while reading Libby Hathorn’s picture book “Way Home”. Students consider how the mood is created through illustrations and language before they study the symbolic significance of features of the story including the cats and Shane’s home.
The attached lesson transcripts come from a Year 6 class in Hampshire. Pupils read the book up to the penultimate page. They are then invited to predict what Shane’s house will look like based on the story so far. This transcript explores the pupils’ exchange after they have worked in groups.
